Union Pacific's weekly potash train glides through Bootlegger Canyon on its way to the potash plant about six miles away. The train originates in Grand Junction, Colorado. It runs on Sundays. It used to run on Fridays, but the Monday-through-Friday "dirt train" supporting the Moab UMTRA project prevents a Friday run to Potash.
Why four units for such a small train? The rear two units are actually dirt train units that were picked up at Brendel (near Crescent Junction) and are being taken to Grand Junction for refueling. (I learned this from the conductor during switching at Potash.) There must be an operational reason for picking up the units on the way to Potash, hauling them to Potash, then hauling them back to Brendel, and on to Grand Junction.
