Looking south at a huge cloud of salt dust being kicked up over the Bonneville Salt Flats. I
was 900 feet (275m) above the salt flats, so the cloud had to be at least twice that height.
A storm blew in from the southwest while I was relaxing on the summit of Floating Island.
Sunshine turned to cloudiness, then heavy overcast. I saw rain fall over the nearby Silver
Island Mountains and watched the wind produce this ever-growing cloud for at least 30 minutes.
It seemed as though the salt cloud would by-pass me, but when the blast of wind hit me I had
the feeling that the wind had shifted, pushing the cloud straight toward me. I grabbed my
pack---already packed in case I needed to make a quick get-away---and descended. Walking
downhill into a fierce headwind was exciting but annoying.
Before I got down to the salt it was obvious that the salt cloud was by-passing me.
As I walked back to the car a light rain started. It turned into a brief downpour
as I reached the car. It was a dramatic end to my first visit to Floating Island.
