I have them and thank you for helping me identify them. They are always eating on the deck whatever falls from the feeder tray. So cure in their antics.

I just saw one of these at my feeder yesterday (eating off the ground) and it was tagged.

THAT’s what’s been visiting my feeder! I was having a heckuva time id’ing them. Germantown, mid-winter. Eating seed and suet.

Live on Eastern Shore of Maryland, lots of these birds eating seeds I threw on ground. Those and finches and titmouse. Was surprised they were here in cold weather. Thanks for posting pictures, now I know what birds I am seeing.

I live in Rosedale Md. in an apt. These guys will hang around all day eating bread and parakeets seeds. I love watching them to bad the squirrels like to chase them off they like the seeds too.

I wonder - do they turn brown in summer? seems they are more gray in winter + I'm thinking these little guys do stay around during summer but turn more brown.

These are at our feeder in Olney MD on 2 / 16.

On Maryland Line, we have these, they tend to eat what drops from the feeder, so I through some seed on the ground for them. We only have them in the winter...very cute and now very fat.

Saw these at my moms, she puts bread out for the birds. These guys seem to sift through the snow with their feet to find crumbs.

I've always called these "snowbirds" and only see them in the winter.

Just saw one today in the crepe myrtle outside our window here in Deale, MD. We have a "Stokes Birds" book -- incredibly extensive. We couldn't identify this bird. Then I remembered your website, and found it immediately. Thank you very much for your wonderful website.

When I was a little boy my mom called these "snow birds" because we only noticed them in our area when the weather got cold...

I was wondering what these were. They come to eat the crumbs from "my squirrels" on my deck! They won't go on the bird feeders. I've been putting some seed on the deck and rails and the number are rapidly multiplying :). Very cute! Great pic

We call them our Penguins... they only show up in the winter and mainly when it snows... We love how they look so formal for the bird feast. :)

We just put up a backyard feeder in Bowie and your site has been great in helping me identify the visiting birds. Thanks!

Yes, they are also called "Snowbirds". And, they do migrate. They all disappear quickly once warm weather arrives. Thank you for taking the time to look at my photo gallery.
Guest 21-Feb-2010 20:45
I believe these are the birds that my mother always calls 'snowbirds'. I wonder if they migrate? It does seem to me that I see them more in the fall and winter.

Great photographs! I had some birds visiting our feeder today and could not identify them. Your pictures helped me figure out they were Dark-Eyed Juncos. Thank you very much!
