7th March 2008 - signing off

Day 1827 – the end.

I’ve now completed five years of my PAD, which I started on 8th March 2003. When I started this, there were only three PADs on pbase, two of which were people I knew, one of whom was David, whose PAD was the very first to appear here on pbase. David had a six month break in 2006 and the other two disappeared so mine became the longest-running PAD on pbase by default.

I did not set out to do it for five years, in fact, I don’t even know that I expected to do a year, having, as I do, the attention span of a flea. However, what I do have is stamina and bloody-mindedness so somehow I’ve found myself still here after all this time.

Today though, it ends. I’m finishing my PAD now. It’s time to draw a line and to stop.

When I started I wanted to give more of a glimpse into life than simply a photo alone, which I knew from watching David’s PAD often didn’t reflect his day as such, it was just a picture with no anchor, no reference point and no meaning over and above its simple being. I’m not saying that’s wrong or not good enough, I’m just saying I wanted to make a PAD about a life. My life, whether good, bad or ugly.

So, I stuck my toe in the water, tentatively at first but gaining confidence as time went on. I found myself liking the experience and loving the friendships made along the way. Meeting people, whether in person or in cyberspace has been a joy.

Thanks for making it such a magical mystery tour.

I want to end with two thoughts, one from Dr Seuss…..

“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened”.

I didn’t set out to make it happen, it grew and flourished with each day.

The other from Depeche Mode (see, I couldn’t go without a reference to one of my musical heroes)……

“it’s a lot like life and that’s what’s appealing”

My guess as to why I’ve had 3 million hits when I’ve not really been one to play the game is that people read it like a magazine or a newspaper, they get drawn in on a google search about something trivial then stay a while.

BUT, it takes me a lot of time and effort to keep it up and I need a break from that. I’ve just calculated that an hour a day (roughly my time taken to shoot pic, write my stuff and post) equates to 76 whole days (of 24 hours) or the equivalent of 228 working days of 8 hours a day. That's more than any UK company would expect to get from an employee in a year of paid work. It’s a big commitment that I didn’t know I was making when I started. So, it’s time to finish.

Goodbye.

Love from

Linda x

I'm delighted to be able to link to last year's shot, which was one of my favourite ever PAD shots, colourful, quirky and horticultural!

The year before (2006) was a bit of a duffer pic-wise but a nice reminder of how our bathroom has improved from this grim hole!

The year before (2005), I was toasting friendship with two of my pbase friends, Jeanne and Tony in California....cheers to you two - and much love.

In 2004, I'd just come home from the trip when we bought our little cottage in Cornwall and, after all the legal stuff, were about to become Cornish residents!

Having moved to a 'photo every now and then' some time ago I'm impressed you've completed 5 years - and also impressed you've been brave enough to stop.... that can't have been easy. Thanks for sharing, inspiring, humouring and of course the sadder bits of life and please pop back with the PeNaT :)
Cheers Ian

Congratulations Linda. Now take a well-earned rest and get fighting fit soon! You have my admiration for completing 5 years, it makes my one year so insignificant in comparison and I only managed to upload images and a small comment. I enjoyed reading your daily log too, which I'll miss (sorry I didn't always comment), and on several occasions you almost inspired me to start PAD again - almost! Just go out there and shoot what you fancy and relax - you deserve it:-)

I am sad that it got over but happy that you will be able to focus on your life. I also realise that this PAD was taking it's toll on you. I would say "ENJOY YOUR NEW LIFE". All the best!. I shall, though keep this link in my Favourites. You never know, may be 5 years down the line, you think about Releasing your PAD again!!! All the best and want to thank you for all the amazing moments that you shared via your lense. Any time you plan a visit to India, do let me know. You have my email id as well.

"Admiration", "thanks" - these are the words that come to my mind at this moment.

I have loved watching your work during those five years, got inspiration and even "stolen" an idea now and then, as well as enjoying your "cyberfriendship".

Well done - enjoy your break :-)

Good'on you girl.. you made it longer than I did. Mine became a 'once in a while' some time back. Keep in touch!

Amazing that you stuck with it that long and were able
to write those long stories to go with them.
Most people demand money for work like that.
Here's a vote for 5 years of sweat equity.

Bye bye Linda. It's been such a lovely 'journey' seeing your images and reading your words (this woman needs to write a book...it would solve all work/living arrangement dilemmas).
It would be lovely if you could post a pic and a few words every now and then......but no pressure!!
I wish you all the very best.
With love from Christa. xx

End of an era? Nah, I don't think so; just a new, healthy happy chapter that lies ahead. I've loved reading this and using it as a way of keeping up with your life, but I also know the extra strain it has put on you at a time you don't need it. You keep getting better - I'll try to get down soon x

I'm wondering how many hours your loyal PadFans have shared with you--with or without letting you know we've been peering over your shoulder while you shared your life. Every time I stop by I go back at least for a month full of catch-up.
Be well, rest, and we'll catch ya on the flip side.

I look forward to seeing what new venue you choose to post here. I know you are not gone, just on hiatus.

My best to you and DM

I have been where you've been . . .it IS on the horizon. You'll see . . .

What an achievement Linda, you've touched so many hearts with your words and inspired us all with your images. Take very good care of yourself, I'm looking forward so much to when you can join us again for another "girlies" night out on the town. In the meantime you know you're very much in our hearts and minds. Cheers my dear - I'll just have to go back and start reading from day one now... :-)) XXX

Thanks for sharing your pictures and your life for so long. We'll miss you. I'm still hoping to visit Cornwall some day. Nancy
Gail Davison08-Mar-2008 13:33
We'll all miss you more than you'll ever know, but it's what is right for you right now, so that you can 'get the balance right' - you see Depeche Mode has the right words for every occasion. Like Nicky and others I look forward to the time when we can all get together again... in the meantime, much love and thank you for your friendship. xxx

You've been an inspiration to many of us padders to carry on even when other things get in the way, we'll all miss your quirky and sometimes very personal commentary. I hope things pick up for you very soon, good luck. Johnny

Five years is an amazing thing.
It's been fun watching. I hope we see you around now and again.

Your site has been truly incredible. I have been startled and delighted by your openness and sharing of events and emotion. I feel a real sense of sadness that you are leaving us. I understand why. What a tour de force you have had. Be well, give David lots of kisses, and enjoy your new found freedom to grow in other ways. God Bless you!

Thank you for sharing yourself, Linda. You were one of the ones that drew me to Pbase and to PAD, along with David. I'll miss your dailies, I'll miss your trials and your triumphs. Most of all, I'll miss your take on life and I'll miss your voice in my head. I'm glad I got to meet you in person when you visited in 2005. Take your well-earned rest and take care of yourself. Love you, Sweetie! (keep in touch!) (this feels like something you'd write in a yearbook... see you next year, have a great summer!)
Al Chesworth07-Mar-2008 21:02
Sorry to see you stand down, however I fully understand.
Keep well Linda. Cheers Al.

I'm sad it's over, but I don't know how on earth you managed it for FIVE YEARS!!!

Hope you'll be posting a PESO or something similar! Let me know when you're in London, I'd love to meet up for a meal.

xxx much love.

Isn't it poignant that whilst reading your final diary entry they were playing "Wake Me Up Before you Go-Go" by Wham on the radio!
It's been quite a journey but really it's just been one part of the itinerary of life.
Thank you for your views, thoughts and insights and I too look forward to your company once again.

OMG was that 3 years ago??

I couldn't last too long with the photos either. But I've seen you go for years, like the energizer bunny.

Congratulations on 5 years!
Nicki Thurgar07-Mar-2008 19:02
I think there will be a lot of people out there who will be feeling a distinct sadness that you have decided to finish your PAD (although we all understand the reasons why). I know I will miss your words (you have a real talent for writing you know!) AND your pictures (yes even the "cack" ones!). I hope you won't disappear altogether, and I also hope that you can break the PAD habit without too many withdrawal symptoms...!

And I'm looking forward immensely to the evening when you are ready to get together for dinner again! Take good care of yourself! XXX
