This morning we were summoned to the optician to get our new specs. Within five minutes of arriving home we’d terrified Rosie who didn’t like us with our new specs at all and I’d knocked mine off the table and onto the floor.
I am:
- chuffed to find I can read stuff now without any difficulty,
- disorientated because when I’ve got them on everything except my book is blurry and that’s strange
- distressed because I’ve got to wear specs forever more now.
Just to try to get used to them you understand, I have spent several hours this afternoon/early evening on the sofa reading my book. It’s odd in itself that I’m reading at home, something in normal circumstances I rarely do – usually I read while I’m away. Since I’ve been off, I’ve read 5-6 books and other assorted magazines and stuff.
Some of the material I’ve read has been disappointing, some thrilling and some just plain excellent. Top of the list is today’s book – “This age we’re living in” by David Wilson – dunno if anyone else has read this out there but I reckon it’s as good as anything I’ve read in a long time. It’s got that “oh I’ll just get to the end of the next section before I put it down….oh, have I read another three sections? Oh I didn’t mean to do that, oh well, I’ll just get to the end of this chapter then I really MUST go and cook dinner” factor.
In a nutshell then, the shot is a perfect (perhaps more so in sentiment than in actual shot) summing up of my day – specs focussing on “a smashing book…..so rare to find….” I agree wholeheartedly with those sentiments, which by the way were expressed by Mavis Cheek. Now – where did I put those specs? I’ll just cram in another chapter before bed.
Last year, nuts!
