7th January 2007 - red

I dunno if I’m just pining because of my ongoing diet (only put on 2lbs over Christmas and am working on getting both back off) or if my eyes are just wide open at the moment but every time I open the fridge I find myself wanting to stick my hand in, grab something and photograph it. That’s what this is.

It is, of course, a red cabbage. Funnily enough, I don’t think I bought more than 2-3 cabbages in all of the time I was in Sandhurst but I have been concentrating on my eat fresh, eat local, one-woman campaign and buying what’s in the farm shop that’s come from local growers. I’m not being slavish – we are still eating red peppers, avocados and stuff like that but we’re mostly eating Cornish in-season produce.

Weirdly or otherwise, I have discovered them (red cabbages that is)to be immensely photogenic and have done quite a lot of shots of them of late (many not for pbase but for other projects, having had a few ‘thefts’ off pbase of late, I’m trying to make sure that if any one is going to benefit from my photos, it’s me and not some who’s just decided to help themselves to my work).

We’re now eating cabbage at several meals a week, much to DMs shock. He said to me yesterday ‘I keep seeing you buying cabbage but I am not seeing piles of grey sludge appearing on my plate at night that have been boiled to within an inch of their lives. What are you doing with them?’

I responded, they’re being shredded into salads, used in place of lettuce in sandwiches, shredded and lightly cooked in quesadillas, casseroles, stir fries and all sorts of other things. ‘MMMmmmmm’ he said, ‘I never thought I’d ever say this, but I love cabbage cooked like that!’

I reckon that’s a result – I also maintain that cabbages are very photogenic!

Last year, frozen plastic ducks!

I love cabbage stir fried. Also in soups. Had not thought of it as a quesadillas ingredient, but that sounds good.--Rene

I remember red cabbage from school dinners! Can semolina be far behind?

I don't think I'll go to Smudger's for dinner when she grows up! I love red cabbage.

It made me think of the inside of your body but now it kind of looks like melting plastic or something! Great shot!

This almost looks like something leather. You will soon have a Cornish flag flying from your cottage ;-)
