25th March 2005 - whoosh

Golitha Falls in the early spring. Just before the bluebells flower and just after the blackest time of year when the sun barely falls on this valley at all.

We’ve been looking for two things today and we found both! Firstly a flat-ish path so I didn’t have to worry too much about my broken toe and secondly a place with no sheep and therefore no lambs so we didn’t need to worry about the dogs being off their leads.

I know we’ve been to Golitha a couple of times before and this image isn’t rocket science or wildly original but I still like the speed of the water through this stretch of the falls.….not that they are hugely exciting (certainly no Niagara) but they are really pretty in this valley that stays really green all year round from the thick carpet of moss that covers everything that doesn’t move. It’s so dark here in the winter that the moss really thrives.

The granite slabs that have fallen down the side of the hill into the edge of the stream provide great table tops for my tiny tripod as the water has worn them smooth over the years. I have been laying on the granite, composing my shot and trying to clear dogs out of the frame for much of the afternoon!

Ambling along the bank of the river, I got into a very strange conversation with a chap who wanted to explain to me how to take photos of rivers. He said (and this is a quote as best as I can remember) ‘to get the best shots you need to put one of those thingys over the lens so it makes the water sparkle and look as if it’s going fast, you’ll not get it without’. I couldn’t decide if he meant a neutral density filter, a polarising filter or a starburst and I was too scared to ask in case he got himself tied up in technical stuff!!! I smiled and said I was giving it a long exposure and that should be OK.

My foot is surviving quite well despite being very sore by the end of each day. It’s now three and a half weeks since I did it so I’m hoping that within a couple more weeks it’ll be back to normal.

Last year I was suffering from lack of sleep and tiredness too - nothing much changes! I think generally this week this year I've taken better pics even though I'm tired than I did last year - I got lambasted for the worst pic I've ever taken by DM for yesterday a year ago!

I disagree with Northy. I think that guy meant you needed a hoolakie on your thimblerig.
I like this. I need to go out and find some water and try this technique. Now, where's my hoolakie?

Wonderful sense of movement here. Interesting light too.

this really captures the movement . . . feels like if you touch it you'll be whisked away =]

I prefer watchamacallits to thingies - each to their own! Very nice shot.

I like this too! But, I like to use my thingie on my whoosit, and then put a whatchamacallit on top all covered on chocolate sauce!

Just beautiful. It reminds me of some of the hidden streams and creeks around Yosemite.

Love the sense of flow here, Linda. A lovely, tranquil location (save the odd pseudo-techie).

I think he meant a double-osscillating gromett.

I've noticed that there does seem to be a lot of moss around this spring. Love the way you have captured the water.

a classic - probably more sparkly with a thingy, but there you go!

Lovely picture, even if you didn't use a thingy....

Very beautiful, nicely captured!

I love the flowing of the stream, and the detail in the foreground rocks goes soooo well with the water.

Great shot, like the emphasised movement in the water.

Great shot with the water working well
