30th December 2004 - freedom to go....

….but wanting nothing more than to stay. Our car is, at last, working again. The mechanic who fixed it for us delivered it back to us at lunchtime and we delightedly drove off to get some sand between our toes.

The reason for this excursion was many-fold. Firstly we were both a touch stir-crazy with being unable to go anywhere although stupidly, I doubt if we would have gone anywhere anyway - it was just knowing we couldn’t that made us nervous. We take our access to all the things we want for granted and when the thing that gives us that access is gone, it seems like a really big deal. It’s one of those things that the car failed on Christmas Eve, especially in the year that we have had the longest holiday period of four days that is possible in our calendar. It’s my fault because I was responsible for getting it booked in for a service and I was too busy so I left it until the last minute. Because of that, it ended up being done on 22nd December and we all know what they say about ‘Friday afternoon cars’ - 22nd of December seems to be a kind of pseudo ‘Friday afternoon’. Note to self - be MORE organised next year - my smug proclamations of being ‘ready’ for Christmas in early December were, in hindsight, stupid! We had, last night, hatched a contingency plan to hire a car if we didn’t get ours back today but at last it went to plan and we got our own car back.

When we were planning this trip, my heart was set on one thing and one thing only - going to see Toby on Christmas Day. I was determined to spend a couple of happy hours on Crantock Beach where my beloved Toby’s ashes were scattered more than five years ago. Alas it was not to be - mind you, the snow up here on the moor didn’t lay down on the coast so we’d have missed the excitement of our white Christmas if we’d gone down to the coast. I was so disappointed to have been unable to make the trip but am planning to go to see him before we go home. It’s good for my soul to have a bit of a chat with him. It’s also the most wonderful place for the living dogs - a completely safe beach, with no nearby roads and miles of golden sand just waiting to be charged over by two energetic Border Collies.

Another good reason for today’s excursion was to visit Whitsand Bay - neither of us had been there before yet it is one of the closest beaches to us. While we were feeding pork scratchings to a little Jack Russell cross in the pub last night (along with Rosie and Archie of course) we got chatting with the owner who told us it how nice the beach there is. So we set out to find it and to explore it for ourselves. This photo is taken there and it was certainly quite a nice beach although too many people on it for our liking really.

The rock structure there is quite different from anything I’ve seen elsewhere in Cornwall - lots of slate rocks and cliffs but the coloration of the rock was amazing - I tried to photograph it with limited success and will post a couple of pics when we get back to a broadband connection.

So, did we spend every last moment of our daylight out of our village? No - we spent three hours away and then just wanted to be back home. It’s amazing the difference that ‘being able to leave’ has on our desire to leave - now we can, we simply don’t want to!

PS - Congrats to David who has finished two full years of PotD today!

Nice portrait. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop. Looks a bit chilly.

With that sad 'Billy No Mates'expression D.M would look better wearing a Bolton Wanderers hat.
