16th October 2004 - weird science

This fat, squat rainbow was shining over Plymouth this afternoon, after a squall of rain passed over us and then over Plymouth, with the sun chasing it all the way.

Yet again, despite arriving here yesterday to be told it'd been wonderful weather all week and seeing a fantastic sunset yesterday we found ourselves in heavy rain today. Mind you, that's OK - I am so jet lagged I can barely function, the entire day I've been resisting the urge to go to bed and sleep but I know that won't help me.

We've also needed to do chores because the wiring will be finished this week, so we needed to buy our wall lights for the electrician to fit. We're having them instead of ceiling lights so we don't have to have exposed electrical cables on our 180 year old beamed sitting room ceiling.

This ceiling is causing us some anxiety today because the electrician has exposed the ends of the beams while he's been cutting out channels in the plaster for the new wiring and they are rotten! They've been reinforced with steel ties so we've had our surveyor friend Alan here checking out their stability and advising us on what we need to do to make sure our bed stays upstairs and doesn't end up on the sitting room floor!!

As we were waiting for Alan, the heavens opened and a thunderstorm raged. Just as he was turning his car, the sun shone on Plymouth and this amazing rainbow was perched.....oh, I'd say just above Simon K's house. We'll be round for the crock of gold tomorrow Simon.

Alan brought Maddie, his mad border collie puppy along and we took the three of them down into the Seaton valley where they charged around like mad things in pouring rain with thunder crashing all around. It was amazing - I've said before that this place is brilliant for weather and it is just amazing in these types of storms. We got wet but I wouldn't have missed it for the world. We're hoping for thunder and lightening tonight so we can get the cameras out and get some lightening.

That's not a short, fat rainbow ... it's a HUGE rainbow just for you!

One of these appeared our way today - but was gone as quickly as it appeared, too fast in fact to capture. Nice shot. CH

Don't want to put the wind up or anything but I suggest sleeping under the table tonight just in case...
