14th March 2004 - the cock crows

It’s not often I get to say ‘we done good’ but today is one of those days.

We’ve been to WHL to see the Spurs play the Toon Army (Newcastle United) and we won. Not a huge lead – a 1-0 win but a win nevertheless. Against the side who would have gone 4th if we’d lost that’s a brilliant result.

What was the best thing about the day? David asking if I thought he’d be able to secure a seat next to or behind Sarah and my season tickets. Why is this so important? Well because he was so adamantly against the Spurs (& footie in general) when we met. He couldn’t believe he’s met a footie fan. He was aghast when he realised I would go to a game rather than spend a day with him.

The first time I went to a game from his place I appeared downstairs on a Saturday morning in my Spurs gear and he said ‘what’s that?’ when I replied I was going to the game his response was ‘what’ll I do while you’re gone?.

He found it very difficult at first, especially as he was only really interested in motorsport.

Gradually I won him round. He started to listen out for our score, then he started to actively watch out for us, then he started to root for us.

He’s always been into motor sports – a big McLaren fan – if it doesn’t have an engine he doesn’t want to know.

I took him to the Spurs. He loved it. He’d never realised what passion a game could invoke. He never knew what it was like to be THERE and smell and feel the passion.

He met our ‘gang’ of friends today that we meet with in the Bell and Hare and got on great with them.

Recently, he’s been to a few games when Sarah can’t be there. He’s got to love it more and more. He wants to get a ticket for himself by our season ticket seats for as many of the home games as he can and is even thinking about a season ticket for himself next season. How I long for that.

We won today – a 1-0 game that you might think was a bit ordinary. Not so, it was a good win, hard fought against a top flight team. And do you know what? We deserved it. We deserved our win, we deserved our three points and we deserved the pride that gave us in the team we love.

I love the Spurs. I love David. I love that David now loves the Spurs.
