This photo is a hybrid shot. By hybrid I mean I was doing two different things with it and as with most hybrids, neither worked out well. This is also what happens most of the time to hybrids in nature! (Can you tell I have an exam in speciation later this week?)

Today is the 1st May. There are no surprises there. Everyone knows it is the 1st May. …Everyone except the weather that is! This morning I got up to a frost. All of the cars outside were covered in white sparkly stuff. I know it’s technically possible to get a frost in the UK as late as the end of May but in Cornwall? I’d be really interested to hear when it last happened here.

Everything in the garden has been waking up because we’ve had a few days of sunshine even though it is still cold. The camellias are among the things that have suddenly started to flower. So, now all of the blooms on all of the camellias are frost damaged (note the yellow colouration on the petals on the outside of this opening bud).

So, I didn’t have enough “guts” to show a completely destroyed fully-in-bloom flower and opted for this lovely emerging bud despite the fact it doesn’t tell the story anything like as effectively.
