Vatnajökull – Glacier of Rivers

South Iceland

Vatnajökull (meaning Glacier of Rivers) is the biggest Icelandic glacier, and one of the largest in Europe.
It is located in the south of the island and covers more than 8 percent of the country.
With an area of 8,100 km², it is the largest ice-cap in Europe by volume (3,100 km³).
It is the second largest in area after Austfonna on Nordaustlandet, in Norway.
The average thickness of the ice is 400 m (1,300 ft), with a maximum thickness of 1,000 m (3,300 ft).
Iceland's highest peak, Hvannadalshnúkur (2110 m / 6921 ft), is located in the southern edge of Vatnajökull.
There are several volcanoes under this ice-cap, as is the case with many of the glaciers in Iceland.
On 7 June 2008, it became a part of the Vatnajökull National Park.
