Easter Island

With the exception of the Seven Adventurers, all the moai face inland with their backs to the sea.
With the exception of a single moai all of the statues are male
It's believed that each moai represents a specific tribal ancestor and the purpose of the moai is to guard the tribe.

Perhaps, they are markers to say "we were once a great people" and "we were here." What will our modern civilization's legacy be, I wonder. That is, once we've done to the planet what these people did to their island.
