The White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) is one of the five species of rhinoceros that still exist. After the Elephant, it is the most massive land animal in the world, weighing up to 4.5 tons. It is believed that the name 'White' was arrived at by mistranslation of the Afrikaans word for 'wide' - referring to their wide mouth, used for grazing. The white rhino is also the most social of all rhino species. Their conservation status is 'near threatened'.
