Desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) shell remains in the Mojave Desert. The desert tortoise was listed as a federal threatened species in 1990. Populations have declined substantially in recent years due to habitat loss/fragmentation, continued collection by humans for pets, raven encroachment, and more recently, upper respiratory disease in the western portion of its range.
