Calleta Silkmoth (Eupackardia calleta)

Fifth instar caterpillar in a defensive pose, protecting its head. Note the small droplets being emitted from some of the spines (scoli).
These secretions, which may sequester toxins from its larval host plant, are thought to ward off predators such as birds.

Original livestock is from Pena Blanca, Arizona.
