This video is about the quest to learn more about wintering hummingbirds. Fred Bassett began researching winter hummingbirds in the Southeastern U.S. in 1997 with a primary focus on South Alabama and Florida. Fred leads Hummingbird Research, Inc, a non-profit organization which has banded over 35,000 "hummers" in 1,000 locations from Miami Florida to Haines, Alaska. During the winter months, he documents Western "hummers" in Alabama and Florida and has captured over 2,000 birds of 10 species in that area. The general public is a critical part of the research and without the people who maintain feeders and flowers for hummingbirds ("hummer hosts") the studies would not be possible. In this video, we accompany Fred as he makes several stops to track and band wintering "hummers" in Alabama and Georgia.
