Spotted Touch-me-not (Jewelweed)

Copyright © Lewis Scharpf

Impatiens capensis
The leucistic hummingbird fed repeatedly on these flowers.
Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are often attracted to this succulent plant.
This plant serves as a critical food source when other nectar plants from the summer have gone to seed.
The nectar of this plant and the insects it attracts are critical to humming birds as they put on weight prior to their migration.
Hummingbirds learn where the Jewelweed populations are and they incorporate these locations into their migroatory routes and teach them to their young.
The alternate "Touch-me-not name is because the seed from the flower has a coil inside and when triggered by being touched or disturbed, it explodes, sending the seeds up to four feet from the parent plant.
