Cicada (Neotibicen)

Pine Hill, Rockcliffe Park

Probably N. canicularis the Dog-Day Cicada. These photos show a newly emerged cicada. In the two photos on the right the wings are not yet fully extended, on the left you can see the wings are now unfurled and eventually the cicadas body will harden off and it will fly away. Unlike the recent emergence of the periodical cicadas (sometimes called 17 year cicadas) in parts of the eastern US, this species is emerges annually and never in huge numbers. In fact, many people would be hard pressed to find them, though they can be heard on hot days.

Beautiful shots of the cicada, a little bit different from the Brood X we saw in summer.

Awesome!!!! And so cool you could actually watch it emerge. We haven’t been hit with the 17 yrs here in my part of TN but we do get our regular annual cicadas.

Those gossamer wings are beautiful...I'm sure you can imagine what our periodical cicadas sound like here in the tropics :)
