Walking across a frozen field, I spied this little nest in a small Spirea shrub. Hard to believe that through all the heavy snow, freezing rain, gusty winds of this winter, this lone egg from last summer is still intact. I don't know which species made the nest, but given its location in a scrubby field, near water, and only a foot or two above ground (though hard to tell because the snow is so deep that the nest at this point was only about 6 inches above snow level) and the colour of the egg, it could be the nest of a Willow Flycatcher.
