Virginia ctenucha moth cocoon (Ctenucha virginica), #8262

Mer Bleue area

The Virginia Ctenucha moth is abundant right now. This striking day-flying moth has been emerging for several weeks, and is still doing so. There are quite a few cocoons on grasses, wildflowers, etc., some empty, some not yet opened, as here. To see the adult moth http://www.pbase.com/laroseforest/image/117030426/original. By the way, I didn`t open the covering... that is how I found it.

Wow. About as Alien looking as can be. Did you open the cocoon or was it like that already? Very interesting to get a peak inside like that.

It amazes me how you seem to find all those bugs ... you must be living in an insectarium! Your photography of the 'small world' is always excellent.
