Baltimore checkerspots ((Euphydryas phaeton) on fleabane

Larose Forest

There are five butterflies on this small cluster of fleabane, and others were trying to get in on the action, as were bumble bees and other bees. The big problem is that the roadsides had been mowed and there were few nectaring plants for insects. Very distressing to see this, especially as the management has been repeatedly told that the mowing of roadsides at this time of year has a very negative impact on butterflies and other beneficial insects (pollinators).

Looks like they're gregarious as adults too! A very attractive butterfly.

Management obviously needs educating (again!) ;-)

This is a management which ultimately destroys its own basis for existence. I think they have never seen a butterfly or a bee, or…
Such a delight to see so many butterflies on one spot! Wonderfully seen, captured and presented, Christine!

What a beautiful sight to behold. You should send the authorities in charge of the mowing this image so they get an idea of what they are destroying. "V"

Our Department of Transportation is responsible for the mowing of roadsides. They are very underfunded and don't have enough money to do the trimming......YAY forf messy roadsides. Score One for the insects!

Fantastic capture.

Texas state and local maintenance don't mow the roadsides in Spring so the wildflowers can bloom. V

Very nice photo of these butterflies. In Belgium the first mowing of the roadsides is on June 15.

Wow, what a beautiful and impressive gathering, well captured! Too bad about the mowing, though, and its impact on butterflies. V.

How lucky can you get? Gorgeous!

We have the same problem and I see less and less butterflies and wildflowers every year due to the mowing of roadsides. Your image and the butterflies are beautiful and they seem happy that some flowers are still available! V
