Honey mushroom (Armillaria), possibly

Lots of these mushrooms in the woods southeast of the city. I think they may be honey mushrooms. This one has had a bite taken out of it by some small creature. Squirrels are frequent mushroom eaters, and snails and slugs love them!

a toasty cap...looks as if it struggled to break through the mulch, then made friends with a scarlet maple leaf..
