Woolly alder sawfly larva (Eriocampa ovata)

Larose Forest. A peculiar looking critter, this is the larva of a sawfly (Order: Hymenoptera) which will eventually transform into a wasp-like insect. It covers itself with a waxy secretion. It is common on speckled alders at this time of year.
