Red-breasted nuthatch

Photographed in the Arboretum. I was walking past a conifer stand when a couple of chickadees came out and waylaid me. I happened to have some seeds in my knapsack and so when I held out a handful, I was expecting chickadees, but to my surprise, this nuthatch flashed past the chickadees, landed, grabbed a seed and took off. Eventually 6 chickadees and 2 nuthatches all made a meal of the seeds. Not a great shot because these guys are fast and I was trying to shoot with one hand (not the steadiest!).

Excellent, you have to be quick with these guys and you were, pretty steady too, I'd say!

He was certainly an opportunist to quickly zip in there and grab a seed! Isn't it cool when they land on your hand and feed from it :-)

Incredible, Christine - never saw a nuthatch sitting on a hand and you even have been able to photograph it - outstanding shot, wow!

They are certainly fast, we have a pair on our feeders too. They rule the roost here, scaring away the tits.
Sheila05-Dec-2012 05:52
You did very well considering it was taken one handed!

Love these guys. I haven't tried long enough to get one to eat from my hand, but they land on the tray and hanging feeder as i'm putting the seed out! Nice shot.
