Woolly alder aphids (Prociphilus tessellatus)

These are pretty common on alder trees... just look for white woolly clusters. The white "wool" is actually a waxy secretion on the abdomen of the aphid. At certain times of the year, lurking amongst them, might the larvae of the Harvester butterfly. Really interesting looking aphid, Christine. Do they start out looking like the ones on the bottom of the group?
