I have long wanted to see one of these dramatic looking orbweavers, but didn't really think I would. And then today, while on my way home through Rockcliffe Park, there she was. I first noticed her because of her prey, a very large water beetle which must have bumbled into her web. Then I saw the spider and was delighted. Fortunately for me, she sat very still. This species is distinctive with its thorny projections and somewhat star-shaped pattern on the abdomen. This female was about 12mm in size, not counting her legs which were pulled in underneath her.
