Leafhopper (Cuerna striata)

A very common leafhopper, especially in spring when large aggregations can be found coming out of wintering sites beneath the leaf litter. They are also found in large numbers in fall, just before heading off to sleep the winter away. This one has some discolouration on its body, and I'm not sure just what the white patches are.

This is a female. White patches are wax secreted from glands near the anus and are called brochosomes; A female uses to put on her eggs but the wax is also spread on the wings, believed to be for waterproofing. Quite a few of the cicadellids produce these.
