Male Banded argiope (Argiope trifasciata)

The males are not often seen, perhaps because they have a short life after mating, or perhaps because they are so small and the large females are the ones that catch the eye. This little guy had a corner of a web in which sat a female with her prey all bound in silk and waiting for her to eat them. The male of this species is between 4-6 mm, while the female is many times larger at between 15-25 mm, and that is just the body, the legs add another approx 60 mm on the female!
