Blister beetle (Meloe sp.), female

There were many, many of these blister beetles in Larose Forest. They are common amongst leaf litter in early spring. The females are very large and heavy bodied, the males are much smaller and typically have a swelling in their antennae at the mid-way point (see here for a photo of a male: http://www.pbase.com/laroseforest/image/134384220). They are also called oil beetles because they emit a rather stinky oily substance when disturbed. This can cause a blistering on the skin if it gets on you. I think these beetles are especially beautiful and the females are particularly impressive due to their size.
