Pictures taken on Pinckney Island just inland from Hilton Head. This is a southern maritime forest typical of barrier islands all along the eastern seaboard from Florida to Virginia. The canopy of trees is usually loblolly pine with scattered live oak in the interior of the forest and lots of live oak and sable palmetto on the edges of the island and along forest edges. The underbrush consists of yaupon holly, saw palmetto and wax myrtle for the most part. There are a series of freshwater ponds on this island which serve as a rookery for ibis, cranes of all sort and other waterbirds.
