Tawny Frogmouth

Often mistaken for an owl but is not related in any way.
Arrived home tonight after a weekend break visiting friends & he was sitting on the fence post. had to use the flash as it was black as pitch out there.
Here he is in full

No kidding! He sure does look like an owl; no wonder they're mistaken for them. Really fantastic shot, either way! Just the right amount of flash. He's quite a handsome fellow...

Awesome shot-and for the flash to work so impressively you must have been close!

sure looks like an owl to me - except for the beak. jaw-droppingly close up, laine!
Guest 03-Apr-2005 19:22
Looks like an owl, tastes(?) like an owl, must be an owl.
Just kidding, nice shot, Laine. How did you get him to pose long
enough for you to shoot?
Gary Winters03-Apr-2005 19:20
This is not an owl? Wow -- you could have fooled me! How did you even spot him, if it was pitch black out there? I'm very impressed!

What a great portrait of the bird. I must say I have never heard of it but is seems similar to a bird we have called a wryneck...

My first thought as I glanced at the photograph was "Night Owl". Although not an owl, great shot. You have so much wild life around you.
