Basalt Columns of Staffa Island

Staffa is an island that is reached by boat from Fionnphort, Isle of Mull, in the Inner Hebrides of Western Scotland. There isn't a proper dock on Staffa, so the boat lets you off and cruises around while you hike the island and hope the boat returns.

Staffa arose when the European and North America continents were drifting apart, allowing magma to rise to the surface and crystallize into huge columns of basalt that form the base of the island. Staffa is a Viking name for pillars. It's a highly unusual landscape with muted colors from the different rocks, lichens, algae, and grass on the island. Most of the walking is around the perimeter, where the basalt columns are in view.
