What a decal! It is terrific. In Britain, the coal mines spawned a huge number of songs and stories, and they pretty well sum up what life is like 'down in the mines'. V

Well...I spect this applies to me. In fact it applies to a majority of my friends. But I'm sure you know, there is a vast difference between coal mining and hard rock mining. I wouldn't set foot in a coal mine on a bet. There's lots of good reasons for that sentiment too. At the top of the list - I like to be alive.

...Where the whiskey drowns And the beer chases my blues away And I'll be okay I'm not big on social graces ..

i hate strip mining too...fly over WV and its everywhere, look at USGS topo maps from the 1980's and its everywhere in WV and KY...look at google maps or google earth and you can see the scars zoomed out all the way to the regional view and you know just what you are looking at only to be comfirmed by zooming in...its sad and painful to think about. However, the reality is, cheap coal is this country's only option at this time, with little investment in alternative energy sources, the nuclear scare, and oil prices sky high.

Thatcher destroyed the deep coal mining industry here in the UK over twenty years ago when she destroyed the National Union of Miners after provoking them into a one-year strike that split the country in two. There are over 300 years worth of reserves, lots of open cast mines, and an awful lot of unemployed miners. Crying shame.

Excellent catch. Says a lot on what society think of the blue collar jobs.

Great catch Karen... I used to say, "We will pay for what we are doing to the earth". But I am begining to think we are paying now.

I have always admired the people who work in the mines--a long and difficult life.

I like your find, Karen. I also like how the fluzi picked out the particles of dust on the window :>)

Nice shot. I work the mines in my youth and knew then that I had to get out of there. I have had some friends die in falls and still have a few that work deep mines. I tend agree with you on the use of strip mines.
