In 1970, the Monte Carlo was introduced. It was basically a Chevelle with an extra foot or two up front, and a load of luxury appointments. While not a luxury, but then maybe it was, an SS 454 model was available, with the 454 making 360 horsepower. 1970 was a watershed year, it was the last year of the high compression engines, it was the last year of truly high performance engines, killed by among other things, the insurance industry. The legendary names and the big blocks continued for a few more years, albeit detuned and emasculated, but 1970 remains the highpoint.
