The Death Chamber

The electric chair used to sit where the four rectangles are in the exact center of the picture. In the background was where they did the autopsy to determine the cause of death. Sing Sing was the home of the death house from the early 1900's through the 1960's, when it was moved to Greenhaven. In Sing Sing, many notorious criminals were executed, including the Rosenberg's among others.

The autopsy was done to so there would be a legal verification that the person died by electrocution, at the hands of the state, and not be some other means. For example the guy commits suicide and then they decide to stick him in the chair just to cover their asses. I agree with others who say this must be the old death chamber.

The death chamber picture is obviously the previous execution room used from 1890-1922. The newer death chamber did have the chair centered between the two side walls - there was also an entry door installed on an angle where the condemned entered the chamber.

On looking at photographs of the death chamber when the chair was in use I must say that this does not appear to be where the chair was positioned, it's to close to the wall, the old photo's have the chair more central !!!

The purpose for conducting an autopsy - post-execution, was likely to meet the laws that many states have saying all deaths in a state institution (be it a prison or state hospital) must be subject to autopsy.
