23rd April 2006Peking opera (京剧) came about during the mid 19th century and was popular in the Qing Dynasty court. The origins of Peking opera was not actually in Peking (now called Beijing) but in the Anhui and Hubei provinces (a few provinces south of Beijing) around the late 1700sOur experience of a Peking Opera was at the Liyaun theatre that included two shows, Death of Yu Ji (霸王别姬) also known as Farewell My Concubine, and Eighteen Arhats Fighting Wukong (坋匐蹕犖須昳諾). Before the shows we were also treated to seeing the actors applying make up and Chinese tea pouring.
