Thanks. I was hand-holding a 70-200 mm 2.8 lens with a magnifier on it. That limited the light; to compensate I shot at a faster shutter speed than was appropriate and brought up the levels in photoshop -- thus the high noise level.
The lighting-shutter speed trade off makes this work difficult. I have a real appreciation for those who make clear and well composed shots.
