Overlooking the Charles River

It's a tough assignment - come to a city you've not been to and look out over it from above - see the history you've read about from grade school, try to make sense of the scene, and capture the moment. We had just arrived at the hotel in Cambridge when I was drawn to the setting sun outside the window. Sailboats were lazily tacking on the Charles, MIT's campus is in the foreground, Boston's Back Bay neighborhood is across the river. For a city so full of busy working professionals, I was amazed by the time spent in leisure activity. It was a nice balance, work and play - I could have been at home in California!

A beautiful light!. It does have a relaxed dreamy feel to it.

really pretty light; really pretty subdued palette.

Lovely tonality here, the warm setting sunlight that pulls together such disparate things as buildings, water and white sails of people enjoying their leisure. Except for a few new skyscrapers it reminds me of the Boston I used to know back in the 60s.

The sailboats look tiny amongst the commercial buildings. But they are equally important, just as leisure is as business.

How interesting the sailboats look sandwiched between the rows of urban structures...really nicely composed!

Love this shot and have always loved Boston! Beautifully captured...oh, to be on one of those sailboats!

Sailing on the Charles is a way of life in busy Boston, and you contrast the worlds of business and pleasure eloquently here, Jenene, with charming scale incongruity.

Leisure?? It has to be a European city ;-)
