Taking it out of its context, this image becomes, as Ray indicates, an metaphor for doomsday. The mushrooming fireball symbolizes a clear and present nuclear danger, while the idle abstracted souls so casually watching the explosion suggest the carefree mindset of world citizenry. Is this a mini preview of a coming apocalypse?
