Greek mythology has Atlas shouldering the heavens as punishment for defying the gods of Mount Olympus. Here, it appears he is taking on the added burden of modern religion as well.

The juxtaposition of religion and mythology is fascinating, particularly because the church seems to absorb much of the mythology.

The world protected / watched by the church? Maybe, but on the other side, most of the conflict these days are religious. An image full of symbolism in both cases.
