A Walk Over the Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge over New York City's East River has been connecting the Civic Centers of Manhattan and Brooklyn since 1883 when it was constructed. The annual average daily traffic is reported to be 145,000 vehicles. Even more interesting, however, is the fact that the bridge has a very active pedestrian walkway and cycling lane and daily pedestrian traffic is in the 1,000s of persons. The bridge is a favorite of native New Yorkers, romantic couples and tourists and is the scene of many photo shoots and wedding photography backdrops.

I took a walk over the Bridge from Manhattan to Brooklyn on windy Saturday in late November and brought along my camera to record some of what I saw. Once over the bridge, I toured DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), an historic district in Brooklyn between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. DUMBO is a former manufacturing area with warehouses and lofts which has become increasingly gentrified since it was discovered by artists and homesteaders in the 1970s. Many of the streets are still cobble-stoned and the older industrial architecture is quite unique, even appealing. The neighborhood is home to art galleries, bookstores, upscale clothing shops, friendly bars, restaurants and wedding caterers. This gallery is an example of street photography in New York City.
