CRW_0831.jpg

A demonstration of the illusion of image sharpness caused by improper sampling. The larger image is a crop of an original resolution image from the 10D, complete with a little bit of motion blur, and shot with a soft lens. The inset on the lower right is the same image, with pixels dropped by using the "Nearest Neighbor" algorithm for downsizing. To some people the inset may be a more detailed image, but it actually has exact pixels from the larger image, but only a fraction of them. If you thought the smaller one was more detailed, your eyes have a lot to learn. Printed separately, at the same size, the smaller one would look sharper, but it would be much more obvious that the sharpness was due to pixellation, and the lack of real detail would be very apparent.

other sizes: small medium large original auto
