Port Costa - California

A major storm had dropped torrential rain in the San Francisco Bay Area for more than two hours - so naturally I had to chase the storm.
That chase led me from downtown San Francisco to this spot - alongside the Carquinez Strait town of Port Costa.

This is one of my favorite communities in the region. A small ragtag collection of artists, poets, writers, drunkards and dropouts take great pride in living here.
Tucked along a cul-de-sac along a narrow and mostly abandoned two lane road - Port Costa is truly a place that time forgot. It was once a bustling seat of commerce.
Before steel bridges spanned the area waters - rail cars bound for San Francisco would be loaded onto barges across the stream in Benica (seen here at left) and then reassembled into trains here. Large warehouses lined the shores.

Only one warehouse remains - a large concrete affair at the edge of town - by the shore. This old edifice houses the town's post office and one of the finest bars on the planet.
