The Rathausmarkt (City Hall Square) was designed as the new heart of the city, after the great fire in 1842 had also destroyed the old City Hall at the Trostbrücke. Once a traffic junction, it was redesigned (1980-1982) and is now used for concerts, wine festivals and other events. Around 4,000 oak piles driven into the marshy ground form the foundation for the City Hall.
