Hope Doorway
to the left of the central portal is the Hope door, dedicated to this theological virtue, altough the examples that Gaudí gives in the shape of sculptural groups are not exactly hope-inspiring, quite the contrary. But this should be interpreted as the hope sustained by the believer even in the face of adversity. Following the Nativity, according to the Gospels, came the slaughter of the Innocents on Herod´s orders. The executioner, who is about to put the child to the sword with the horrified mother begging him to stop, is actually modelled on a giant of chap.
