The late-Renaissance high altar (1623-40) is Poland’s largest and is believed to be the largest timber altar in Central Europe.
The main painting - by Herman Han, Coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Koronacja NMP), 1623-24.
Herman Han (1574-1627) was a fashionable Danzig (Gdansk) painter and also nominated as a Royal painter.
For making this big painting, Herman Han got a very high and varied salary:
"1200 florins payable in installments, one good horse, 2 cows, 4 pigs, 12 rams, 15 geese, 40 hens, 30 bushels of rye , 40 bushels of oats, 20 bushels of barley, 5 bushels of peas, 3 measures of butter and 4 barrels of beer".
