Bread With Lard

Warsaw, Poland

A slice of bread spread with lard (in Polish "smalec") was a typical staple in traditional rural cuisine of many countries. It was once very common in Europe and North America,
Also nowadays it is popular as a traditional snack on elegant parties, served with sour cucumbers. Lard with cracklings, fried bits of onions and salt is best for sandwich spread.

Looks wonderful....never have tried lard but my grandparents ate it and lived past 100 so it can't be all bad for you! Love this presentation!

Like the subject matter and the selective focus works well.

The bread looks very tasty. Nice DOF.

I think I would like that---pork rules. Nice light in this photo to showcase the bread.

A great sandwich for a cold winter's day...yep, Bernard's right - bread and dripping in the UK, but a universal delicacy nonetheless
Fay Stout08-Sep-2009 16:23
good looking bread...

Beautiful photo with this depth of field. Looks delicious. We call it Schmalz and my favorite is made with goose lard with tiny bits of fried onion in it. Excellent with freshly baked bread.

Bread and dripping in the UK. Best served hot. Takes me back a few years. That looks like a feast.

Lovely looking bread, but I'll give the lard a miss. I can remember the
days when bread and dripping (maybe that's Australian for lard?) was commonly
eaten particularly during and after WW-2.
Guest 08-Sep-2009 11:06
wonderful, very full table of the lard(ed) bread! V
