Orford Ness is the longest shingle spit in Europe and it's remoteness attracted the military as long ago as 1913.
From 1913 to 1985 top secret work at Orford Ness was inter-twined with the events of the 20th century. The Royal Air Force started here, Radar was invented here. The first parachute jump happened here. And through the cold war, chilling top secret bomb testing was carried out in the anonymous looking concrete buildings.
Orford Ness was handed over by The Ministry of Defence to the National Trust in the late 1980's and nature is now claiming back this unique landscape. Rare birds and insects are now protected.
