20050517 Nearly a bit of Canadian History

Ashdown House, Oxfordshire, England

Another picture of Ashdown House which was built as a Hunting Lodge by an English Aristocrat (The Earl of Craven) for Queen Elizabeth of Bohemia who at the time was down on her luck
and had no home in England despite being sister of King Charles 1st.

Anyway, she never did live at Ashdown. And the property stood empty for 20 years.

So what has this to do with the history of Canada? Well, she had a son called Prince Rupert who was a bit of a Rambo character in the Civil War. He fought in a lot of local battles in this area, and as a reward for helping regain the throne, he was granted control of huge areas of Canada and this led to the establishment of The Hudson Bay Company.

And now, the house is about to undergo work to remedy the lean which can be seen here by comparing the lines of the house with the carefully trimmed top of bush in the garden (centre).

Interesting, wonder how they will correct the lean? Or is it to prevent it leaning anymore?

Thanks for the history lesson, John. Nice to know it was finally occupied.

I really love your subject in this image. I also like the lighting that reflects upon its walls and the strength that this house shows, maybe because of its structure.

Nice place to live but the cleaning job must be time consuming. ;^))

Beautiful looking building, with many, many windows. Nice find!

is the work to stop it from leaning more or to straighten it? Nice detail in the shot.

Yes, it does have a distinct lean to it. Nice capture, and thanks for the history which was never my strongest subject....

This looks like it should have an elderly couple, him holding a pitch fork in one hand, standing in front. LOL. Nice shot, excellent use of lighing.
